Shaft covers, rectangular
In addition to one-piece round manhole covers, e.g. for sewer manholes, square shapes can also be found over various manhole openings. The manhole covers are also used away from road traffic, e.g. as access to underground supply lines or inspection chambers. Rectangular manhole covers are also frequently used for construction work. HAILO Professional offers the right rectangular manhole cover for all these applications.

Load classes of square manhole covers
The square type of manhole cover must withstand certain loads (measured in kN - kilonewtons). The DIN EN 124 standard provides the framework for the type of manhole cover. In particular, the load classes (A-F) of the manhole covers are regulated here. For example, class A 15 defines a test load of 15 kN, which corresponds to a load limit of 1.5 tons. This cover would only be suitable for loads from pedestrians and cyclists. Class B covers are suitable for traffic-calmed zones and class D for normal road traffic. For higher load limits, class E (DN 600 kN - 60 tons load limit) or F (DN 900 kN - 90 tons load limit) should be used. Further details can be found in the corresponding regulations for manhole covers.

Square manhole covers made of stainless steel and other material characteristics
Square and round classes of manhole covers are made of different materials depending on their structural purpose. The material also largely determines the weight of the manhole covers. Manhole covers, for example, are often made of cast concrete and steel and are therefore particularly heavy. Most of our square manhole covers are made of high-quality pickled stainless steel, as this material is durable and robust. Another advantage of stainless steel is its resistance to rust, which is further enhanced by hot-dip galvanizing.
What is galvanized steel and what happens when steel is hot-dip galvanized?
Hot-dip galvanized steel is created when a metallic zinc coating is applied to steel by immersing it in a zinc alloy at 450 °C. Galvanized metals form a resistant phase at the contact surface - e.g. of zinc and steel - and a firmly adhering, pure zinc layer on top.

The square covers are watertight and suitable for fire protection
The covers must not only be suitable for traffic or foot traffic, but must also be used as a system for waste water or for fire protection. The frame of the square manhole cover must be flush and tight with the surrounding material. The lid and frame ensure that the manhole cover is watertight thanks to the integrated seal. The combination of galvanized material, the tight frame and the integrated seals make the square types of manhole cover watertight. For your maximum work safety, HAILO also offers manhole covers that are flood-proof. For more information on our manhole cover system designs, please contact us.
Paveable covers

Are you looking for paveable covers?
HAILO Professional can help here too. Some models of our floor gates and manhole covers can be set in concrete and paved. These covers are flush with the paving around them at the same height and can then be removed from the paving, allowing access into the manhole.
