Shaft covers, round
Round manhole covers are usually found on roads. We walk or drive over them every day. But manhole covers are also used outside of road traffic, e.g. in tunnel construction or at port or airport facilities. For these different purposes, manhole covers have to meet special requirements. HAILO Professional offers individual solutions for most load classes and applications. Our round covers are used as manhole covers that can be driven over or for inspection chambers and cisterns.
Professional and high-quality HAILO systems for your manhole cover
At HAILO, we offer various classes of high-quality, watertight and DIN-tested manhole cover systems for your individual use. You can choose between different load variants (kN), between flood-tight or watertight products and weights. Our products are made of galvanized steel or stainless steel and can be walked and driven over. For optimum safety, we offer an emergency release as an opening aid so that the cover can be opened from below. Depending on the size of the hole, different diameters of cover are available, for example for different sized openings in ducts. In addition to the round covers, we also provide square versions of different sizes and heights as well as suitable accessories. Manhole covers are also available in flush-floor and floor-level versions - depending on the area of application!

Load classes of manhole covers
Regardless of whether pedestrians walk over them or cyclists, cars and trucks drive over them, the construction of manhole covers must be able to withstand all of these loads. To ensure this, the DIN EN 124 standard regulates the framework for the various load classes for drive-on and walk-on types of manhole covers. They are divided into load classes A to F. These range from light products for traffic areas, suitable for pedestrians and cyclists, to cars and areas with heavy wheel loads such as airports (heavy loads). For example, class A defines a test load of A15 kN (kilonewtons), which corresponds to a load limit of 1.5 tons. These traffic areas can only be used by cyclists and pedestrians. Covers for manholes on roads must at least comply with class D with a test force of 400 kN and thus a load limit of 40 tons. Details can be found in the relevant DIN-EN standard.
Stainless steel manhole covers and other materials
Manhole covers are made of different materials depending on their use. They can be produced in hot-dip galvanized steel or stainless steel. Stainless steel manhole covers are also available in different variants. Stainless steel V2A or stainless steel 1.4301 are often used. The advantage of this type of stainless steel is its resistance to rust in contrast to other steel manhole covers. Corresponding manhole covers are also available in hot-dip galvanized steel.
What is galvanized steel and what happens when steel is hot-dip galvanized?
Hot-dip galvanized steel is created when a metallic zinc coating is applied to steel by immersion in a zinc alloy at 450 °C. Galvanized metals form a resistant phase at the contact surface - e.g. of zinc and steel - and a firmly adhering, pure zinc layer on top.

Water protection for manhole covers
Furthermore, cover systems must not only be passable, but also fulfill other functions. Manhole covers protect supply lines from water and dirt, for example. Stainless steel gas struts ensure that the manhole covers are easy to open and close and that the ring between the pipe and the cover is firmly sealed and rainproof. EPDM seals are also often used to ensure optimum weather resistance. The combination of V2A stainless steel manhole covers, the rainproof seals and the ingenious opening aid make the manhole covers watertight. We also offer stainless steel manhole covers that are flood-proof.

Different trafficable surfaces for your intended use<
The manhole covers are also available in various designs with regard to the so-called clear width. The clear width describes the size of the opening of a manhole. Depending on the vehicles for which the galvanized manhole covers are to be accessible, there are different surfaces to choose from, ranging from aluminium to checker plate or corrugated sheet metal to stainless steel corrugations (V2A). We at HAILO will help you with competent and comprehensive advice on the way to your desired product. Please feel free to contact us.
